Catholic Priest scandal; A DUTERTE EXPOSE

Headlines in local Newspapers in the region is the expose’ of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte of a certain Fr. Pedro “Pete” Lamata who is the parish priest of the St. Mary’s Parish in Buhangin, Davao City.

The expose’ of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte on television last Saturday, January 31, where he waved an alleged marriage certificate of a local Catholic priest and a woman, vowing to bare more names of priests in amorous relations, in an admitted retribution for a slur on him and his family and the priest’s refusal to have his parish assist in the distribution of city government-funded Yuletide gifts to poor families.

Duterte also said Fr. Lamata slurred him and his family including daughter Vice Mayor Sara Duterte whom the priest called “Inday Badiday” in one of his homilies. The priest, Duterte said, had also been assailing him for summary executions in the city, which the priest blamed on the city mayor.

The married priest, Fr. Pete Lamata of St. Mary’s Parish in Buhangin, according to Duterte contracted marriage in 1882 in Bohol with an Asuncion Baluran two years after being ordained in 1980.

Davao Archbishop Fernando Capalla admitted that Fr. Pedro “Pete” Lamata had contracted marriage during the early days of his priesthood but had been suspended to make amends before he was accepted back into the priesthood.

But up to the present the said marriage has not been annulled and the marriage is still legally binding.

Philippines settles tax dispute with New York

Courtesy of ABS CBN NEWS

WASHINGTON D.C. - The Philippines will pay $9 million to settle an almost six-year-old legal battle with New York City, the Philippine Embassy announced here Thursday (Friday in Manila).

In a statement, it said the settlement avoided "great legal costs, increases in interests and fines and the very real possibility of an adverse judgment amounting to over $27 million."

The case arose by the alleged failure of the Philippine Center Building, which is owned by the Philippine government, to pay $37 million in real property taxes covering the period January 1974 to January 1995.

The New York City government alleged that three occupants of the building - Philippine Airlines, the Philippine National Bank and the restaurant "Maharlika" - were commercial in nature and not exempt from local taxes.

The city government sued the Philippines at the US District Court in New York in April 2003, attempting to collect $37 million in back taxes plus interest.

The Southern District of New York court ruled against the Philippines and demanded it pay $10.9 million for PAL and PNB.

Both the Philippine government and New York City appealed the decision - New York City lawyers wanted to include the $27 million in back taxes they alleged was owed for the operation of Maharlika restaurant.

"The Philippines had put up a vigorous political and legal struggle over the years," the statement read, "but a 2007 US Supreme Court decision effectively limited the legal options that a foreign government had in terms of challenging the jurisdiction of New York courts."

"After consulting its legal counsel and after a thorough study of the case a decision was taken to settle the case, but at an amount lower than the existing judgment against the Philippines," the statement read.

"This is a problem that resulted from certain decisions that were taken over three decades ago that could not be allowed to continue to fester and drain our resources," it continued.

Embassy officials pointed to the $1.9 million savings they were able to generate settling the case and finally ending a longstanding feud with the New York City government.

Nursing; 5 years na? (A Digoseno's Point of View)

One of the most talked about issues right now in the Philippines is the Commission on Higher Education's (CHED) plan to make the BSN(Nursing) a 5 Year Course from its present 4 year curriculum.

Well the CHED finds it a way for Philippines to be more competitive with all the other countries competent nurses. Well the citizenry has a different opinion.

We have gotten a hold of a couple of statements:

" So they mean Filipino Nurses are incompetent? have they checked the present status of Filipino Nurses lately? We are already above competency level.. this is a direct insult"
-RN GG

" Are they saying that the programs the universities and colleges have are not enough? Why don't they conduct a more loyal evaluation on the subject matter to make it more evident then we discuss the matter. We believe that the Nurses the Philippines produce are Top of the Notch!"
-Ragistrado!

"It doesn't make any sense... instead of making life easier for the Filipinos, they are just adding burdens for its Citizens.. Have they no sense at all? They better see the big picture before they do anything drastic, they might just lose everything"
-aktibistang RN

These are just some of the opinions stated by Digosenios.. if you would want your voice to be heard. Comment and well gladly publish it.

I just hope the government an d CHED would even consider hearing out the peoples sentiments.

Dasureco BOD's Politically elected!

The Davao Del Sur Electric Cooperative is undergoing its district by district election of board of Directors. and now. instead of leaving the election to the people. its more likely that big politicians are going on about getting their "manok" elected....

What would the get out of these efforts? is it really because of their concern and principles or are their some hidden agendas behind these actions. Well, not to link this with the political division and rivalry of Cagas and Latasa but it is left for the people to look at the situatiopn and take it unto themselves.

PADIGOS BLOGSPOT TEAM went about the community and discussed with some locals on what they think should happen and what they could say about the present situation, and we got these very nice feed backs:

" Ako pa nila wa nalay pakialamay, kung makialam unta kanang sa tama nga pamaagi ug kanang naa sa lugar, samok naman gud kaayo inidyahay ra ug pasikat!"
-Manang Arlyn(Barangay Zone 2)

" Saba na kaayo na cla uy.. sila ra man madato! nag pinatyanay na ang mga supporters nila and den away bati ra sila... politiko man gud.. unta lang dili gamiton ang mga kabos sa ilahang pamulitiko kay lain man gud na nga buluhaton"
-Tatay Sinyong( BArangay Zone 1)

"Daghan waiting shed, daghan karatula, padaghanay silang duha ni latasa pero hantod sa Dasureco Charm japon ang tigpamaba para daotanay.. sa detalye pud si mayor! Samokan ko nila uy! ijahay rag pakig gubot!"
-HCAD Student

" They are showing the youth a negative example of leadership.. they should seek spiritual guidance and retreat unto God who has wisdom beyond they could ever have."
-CJC Leader

People had a lot more to say, these are just some. I hope that the BODs of DASURECO whom are now elected would not be like the politicians that giot them their and put asside differences and work for the task they wanted so much.

Cagas-Latasa Feud Part II

A BATTLE IN WINNING SHAMEFULL TITLES

Hmmm.. this is yet another expose to the people of Davao del Sur and of Digos City more specifically.... ranked as the longest running Mayor in the Philippines, Mayor latasa stands in the spot light to claim the glory of his title... but to claim the title of one of the most unethical political scandals in the Philippines given to Congressman Marc Cagas for making a public Scandal on the Jollibee Drive through grand oppening creditted to his fione actions toward the Barangay Captain of Zone I and to the Management of JOLLIBEE Digos City Drive through.

Frankly that title is not something to be proud of, people would just wish that the leaders would take things a little more ethically and more professionally.

The Mayor is also headed on the same track, if the Cagas used Charm and public appearances the mayor uses DETALYE( local cable show) to bombard the oponent. Using vulgar and in appropriate words, they give davaoenios a bad impression and a view of how politics is in Mindanao!

More info in the oppening of Jollibee pls Visit DABAW PINOY......

RED CROSS Volunteers captured in Sulu

3 International Committee members of the Red Cross, including an Italian and a Swiss, were kidnapped in Sulu province last Thursday.

Lt. Gen. Nelson Allaga, Armed Forces Western Mindanao Command chief, said soldiers are currently pursuing the armed group who kidnapped Swiss national Andreas Notter, 38, ICRC head in Zamboanga City; Italian national Eugenio Vagni, 62, Davao-based delegate for the ICRC’s Water Habitat Project; and Mary Jane Lacaba, a Davao-based ICRC engineer.

Allaga said the Red Cross team had just inspected humanitarian projects in Jolo and were scheduled to take a SeaAir flight to Zamboanga City when they were kidnapped.

Sen. Richard Gordon, the head of the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC), said the three had just visited inmates in Patikul town when snatched by at least eight armed men near the provincial capitol around 11:30 a.m.

The victims were with ICRC medical field officer Dr. Richie Sorilla, senior field officer Ramon Catacutan and field officer Mohammad Shihata Jikiri.

Authorities said the kidnappers left the three field officers and took their cellular phones and other valuables.

Allaga said the kidnappers used the ICRC team's vehicle for their getaway. He said the vehicle has been recovered by pursuing members of Task Force Comet, headed by Maj. Gen. Juancho Sabban.

The WesMinCom chief said he has yet to receive confirmation that the kidnappers are members of the Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf bandit group. He said the kidnappers and the ICRC team could be travelling on foot.

Reports said the ICRC officials were taken by an Abu Sayyaf sub-group headed by Albader Parad.

"The troops are in hot pursuit and the latest is they have already recovered the vehicle... They are now travelling on foot," the military official said. "They are exerting their best efforts to catch up with the abductors."

The military said the abductors were on their way to Barangay Bud Pula in Patikul town.

The Abu Sayyaf is the smallest and deadliest of Moro rebel groups operating in southern Philippines. The group is notorious for kidnappings and is based on Jolo and the nearby island of Basilan.

The bandit group has twice attacked luxury beach resorts and taken away tourists, including Westerners. They have held them for months at a time and secured large ransoms for their release.

In 2001, three kidnap victims, including an American, were beheaded by their captors.

The Abu Sayyaf has also been blamed for the bombing of a ferry near Manila Bay in 2004 that killed 100 people.

Will they not respect any banner that may come their way? They have taken it a little too far through this nonsense war of territory and rights... They themselves are showing the biiter part which they tend to fight against in the first place.

Stop the war, stop the terror, stop the horror of brothers fighting against brothers.

Cagas-Latasa Feud

Digos City, the Capital City of the province of Davao del Sur is now facing a feud between two of its executives. Gov. Douglas Cagas of Davao Del Sur and Mayor Arcenio Boy Latasa of the City of Digos. Is this clearly just another political show or is this a war of priciples. Let us examine the details a little more carefully so that we will arrive to the right points in this thought.

-Both are politicians belonging to different political banners.
-Both are veterans in the feild of Governing(not to mention Ages of Bickering)
-Both are planning to run for the 2010 elections(who knows for what position they are to run for)

on the other hand;

-Both tend to serve the people by the means they know best.
-Both wants to put up their own projects in Estrada Public Market.
-Both wants to look good for the people(hero +points)
-Both has a lot of avid followers and die hard fanatics(Specially their employees)

Well the " She Says He Says" syndrome struck again as both sides deffend themselves in the issues the face that do not only affect them personally but gravely affects the economic situation of the poor community that is Digos.

Well for a thought; the Jollibee Digos Drive Through finally openned even if you cant drive through it due to Gov. Cagas' Railings placed outside the establishment and untill now Charm FM never Sieze to Bombard the ears of the listeners with all their points agains the City Executive and Legislative body. Well the Problems with that establishment and the so called Road Right of way is now in the proper forum, that is that of the Judiciary Chamber of the State.

Well, I just hope that things turn out the way it should be, the way things aughto go... The Right way so that A little Peace would be Resounded from the hills of the province of Davao del Sur and its Capital city.
