Headlines in local Newspapers in the region is the expose’ of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte of a certain Fr. Pedro “Pete” Lamata who is the parish priest of the St. Mary’s Parish in Buhangin, Davao City.
The expose’ of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte on television last Saturday, January 31, where he waved an alleged marriage certificate of a local Catholic priest and a woman, vowing to bare more names of priests in amorous relations, in an admitted retribution for a slur on him and his family and the priest’s refusal to have his parish assist in the distribution of city government-funded Yuletide gifts to poor families.
Duterte also said Fr. Lamata slurred him and his family including daughter Vice Mayor Sara Duterte whom the priest called “Inday Badiday” in one of his homilies. The priest, Duterte said, had also been assailing him for summary executions in the city, which the priest blamed on the city mayor.
The married priest, Fr. Pete Lamata of St. Mary’s Parish in Buhangin, according to Duterte contracted marriage in 1882 in Bohol with an Asuncion Baluran two years after being ordained in 1980.
Davao Archbishop Fernando Capalla admitted that Fr. Pedro “Pete” Lamata had contracted marriage during the early days of his priesthood but had been suspended to make amends before he was accepted back into the priesthood.
But up to the present the said marriage has not been annulled and the marriage is still legally binding.
